San Francisco Construction Accident Leaves 3 Workers With Serious Injuries
On August 31st, three construction site workers were seriously injured when a support structure gave way at the site where the three men were working. The accident occurred in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood shortly before 8:00 a.m. Workers were pouring concrete and were on the roof of a six-story structure when the accident took place.
According to authorities, the three workers were in a stairwell and fell at least three stories after the support structure failed. They were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where two of the workers remained in serious condition two days after the accident occurred. On September 2nd a hospital spokeswoman stated that the third worker’s condition had been upgraded to fair. A fourth worker sustained minor injuries after attempting to assist those who fell at the time of the collapse.
At the time of the accident the cause remained unclear. According to a spokeswoman for the California Division of Occupational Health and Safety, CAL/OSHA crews had been to the site two times within the previous six months and saw no apparent problems during those visits. The investigation in to what caused the support structure to fall is expected to take several months.
The construction site where the accident took place is located at 19th and Illinois Streets. When firefighters responded to the scene, the three workers were covered in concrete that had not yet hardened according to fire Battalion Chief Charles Crane. The construction workers were working at the Potrero Launch project which is a high-rise that will offer retail stores on the ground floor with residential units located on upper levels.
The injured workers were employed by Nibbi Brothers General Contractors according to California Division of Occupational Health and Safety spokeswoman Patricia Ortiz.
